Experience in  Architecture &  Planning

1974-76 a partner in “Unit-4”, an architectural practice. Designed PIA Squash Complex, project was nominated for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Mentioned in many books. Carried out planning projects

1976 to date set up two architectural firms, one named
GROUP 1” & the other, “Navaid Husain Associates.

Won 4 national design competitions:

  • PIA squash complex nominated for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture

  • Accountant General’s office, 180,000 square feet of space in Karachi

  • UBLs head office, project was never built

  • Bureau of Statistics Building, 80,000 square feet of space in Karachi.

1976-80 carried out design and supervision for the World Bank for colleges measuring 400,000 square feet of space located in 7 sites in Sind

1979,10-year master plan for Sind Agricultural
University for the World Bank

1985 onwards carried out design of buildings and interiors for multi national
firms, banks and organisations such as IBM, Bank of America, Deutsche Bank, Indosuez Banque, Lever Brothers, Liptons, Brooke Bond, Pakistan International Airlines, World Bank, ABN Amro Bank, Chase Manhattan Bank, Union Texas Petroleum, ANZ Grindlays Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Doha Bank, Standard Chartered Grindlays Bank, Bank of Tokyo, Siemens, AEG, COTECNA Target Corp etc. Designed houses, factories, office buildings, sports facilities, educational Institutions & hospitals

1978-80 taught architecture students part time at Dawood College, Karachi, ( Familiar with Auto CAD )


Human Rights Activities

4 1981-88, joined Movement for Restoration of Democracy (MRD) against army dictatorship with “Qaumi Mahaz I Azaadi”, a political party. Was a member of Central Committee, arrested in 1987 during demonstration 

4 1988 onwards established a public interest litigation organization. Was its honourary founding Chairperson for six years. Organised campaigns, meetings, workshops and court cases, (especially against illegal buildings) had a wide network with other NGOs. Read papers to do with developmental strategies. Commenced work on making this a gun-free state 

4 The organization is a member of International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) & supported by Freidrich Naumann Foundation of Germany  

4 Set up a NGO newsletter published in Urdu, Sindhi and English

4 1993, armed attack against me organized by construction Mafia carried out by Chief Minister’s son. Four policemen pointed their kalashnikovs & beat me up.  Army intelligence, police and government officials intervened. Tension increased as the next day I drew up a police report against their armed presence which continued for months

4 1997, 8th July, assassination attempt. Bullet wounds in temple & stomach.  I have fully recovered

4   2000, “Woh Kaun Hai?” (Who Is He?)
a 15 part commercial TV series on Pakistan TV played weekly, based on my second assassination. TV series is partly filmed in my office.

4 Author of articles on politics, development and environment published in national papers. Important policy papers such as “Democratizing the UN Security Council”, “South Asian Development Bank”, “South Asian Nuclear Shield”, Kalabagh Dam & the Population Explosion” etc.
